About me -
I have been creating art since I was a child. I have the first paint-by-number I did when I was 5 years old. Besides admiring my use of a heavy black outline, it makes me wonder who was letting a kindergartener paint with oils? But I loved to draw and I painted my first murals in my elementary school.
I often read bios of photographers who say they were given a camera at 11 and instantly fell in love with the medium. That is not my story (although it might be my son's). Painting was my first love. I didn't discover photography as an art form until my mid-twenties. I took a couple college classes and I too was smitten. I loved experimenting in the darkroom, often solarizing prints and stacking negatives. But it wasn't until my late 30's that I shifted my focus from painting back to photography. A combination of the freedom of shooting with my first digital point and shoot, and finding my life to busy for painting, led me to get a DSLR. And this time I haven't looked back!
I am able to capture all those scenes that I previously thought I would love to paint but never got around to. I can shoot anything and everything. But I haven't turned my back on film either. My favorite camera is the cheap plastic medium-format Holga. I also have an old Nikon FE loaded with black and white film in my camera bag. I am able to record moments in time and create new works of art. The possibilities are endless and I still have so much to learn.
When I finally put the camera down, I find my family patiently waiting for me. I live in Lincoln, CA with my husband, my 12 year old son and 2 year old daughter. I am a web designer and developer, an out-of practice yogini, a student of Taekwondo, a voracious reader, a sporadic knitter, and a reluctant cook. I have been described as a 'kicky' gal. I can live with that.
But please don't call me an engineer.
