"The Price of Enlightenment" is here!

Wow. My first solo photography show opened this past weekend. I think I am still trying to process the whole experience.

The Artist Reception was Friday night, and it was great. Friends, family, professors and fellow students all in attendance and of course full of support and praise. A fantastic evening and my only regret is not taking more photos!

The next night was the 2nd Saturday reception and my first real exposure to the general public. And if art is meant to provoke and elicit a reaction, well then mission accomplished! Good or bad, people definitely responded! The evening was absolutely surreal. My favorite moments were when someone would step into the gallery, took a quick look around, mutter "dolls, um no!" turn around and quickly exit! classic.

Again, I neglected to take pictures. Luckily, other people were not so preoccupied. Here is time-lapse video put together by one of the Viewpoint docents. And this is pretty much how the whole evening felt for me!

Crazy.

Thank you to everyone who came out this past weekend. And a special thanks to my husband Chris and my family for putting up with all the craziness these past few months as I finished all the little details in putting this exhibit together. <cough>artist statement</cough>

The show runs through the rest of August, so you still have plenty of time to go check it out. enjoy!

It's August!

How is that possible??

The State Fair is over. I pick up my pieces this Friday. And then on Sunday, the Member's Show at Viewpoint gets taken down and we hang my solo show!

Let's all take a moment here to bend forward and put our head between our knees - and/or - breath into a paper bag. Reader's choice.

I should be out plastering the town with those fancy postcards I had made. Hell, I should be working on finishing up that artist statement! But I'm in oral surgery recovery mode, so that will all have to wait. I have 9 days until the Artist Receiption. Once all these drugs leave my system, I predict that I'm gonna need a bigger paper bag.

So, you have a couple more days to get to Viewpoint and check out the Member's Show. This is my "Three Graces"

And a week from Friday I'll see you at the Artist Reception!

State Fair Awards Ceremony

So, in triple digit heat (and against everyone's better judgement) Chris, Erin, and I went to the California State Fair last Saturday for the Fine Arts Exhibit Awards Ceremony.

I picked up my Merit Award ribbons and received the Viewpoint Photographic Art Center Award for Color Photography for "Madonna and Child"! And from the Exhibit Catalog:

Juror's Statement

The color photograph Madonna and Child references 16th century ecclesiastical artwork. This artist usea a Madonna paired with a cherubic-baby doll and a Renaissance-color palette to create a double-take piece of hyperbole that is a thought provoking and imaginative piece. - Sharmon Goff

Find a nice cool day (at least below 100 degrees!) and go to the fair before it closes on the 29th!
